Robb Murphy is an Irish singer/songwriter, who’s also getting more known in the Netherlands. Which is not that surprising because he sings and writes beautiful songs! My favorite song from Robb (so far) is I’ll Follow. I was really curious about the story of the man behind the music and asked Robb some questions.
Was it a childhood dream to become a singer?
No it was not, I have always liked listening to music, then playing at an early age but i did not see myself as a singer songwriter when I was a child.
What inspires you in general to write a song, and especially the song I’ll Follow?
My songs are mostly about my personal experiences, or experiences that could have happened if I had made different choices. I’ll Follow in particular was written quickly, a moment were I was in ‘that mood’, thinking about how different people we meet can sometimes get very different impressions of us.
How would you describe your style of music?
I like a lot of different styles of music and this comes across on my first album. I would describe it as acoustic/pop/electronic. Lately I have been writing more acoustic folk based songs, these will be on the new album which is called ‘Sleep Tonight’. I am sure I will change genres again after this one has been recorded and I will always experiment.
What was your biggest success until now?
In music, I guess it would be the song, ‘Love In Abundance’, this was the simplest song on the album and it seems to keep going and gain new listeners. The video we shot for it also came together really well.
You visited Holland last year, what’s your opinion about our country?
Loved it, relaxed friendly atmosphere, with people who were very supportive of new music. And loved the cycling 🙂
Will you be back soon, to perform for your Dutch fans?
Yes plans are being made and we will be back, news on that very soon.
What’s it like, to be on stage and perform?
Mostly I feel grateful for people taking the time to listen to me, it’s good to be able to share songs that have been written in a quiet moment, with an audience, who can make their own interpretation of them.
What’s your life vision? Question from Ellen Berends
I do not really have one, this is may be not a great idea, but I like to take things as them come. Life is variable and plans sometimes do not work. My music for example, I did not plan to share it with so many people, it has grown generically.
What has been your greatest success so far in your life?
Many things get thrown at you as your life progresses, I think we all should be happy we are still here, keeping going, I would call that success.
Name 5 people, dead or alive, you would like to spend an evening with? This question is from Monika Daniels
This is probably not the answer you are looking for, but i would pick five of my friends, with them I would feel most comfortable and have a great nights craic.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
No big plans, just Livin 🙂
